down again The heroes of the story aren t your typical black and white, all good or all evil fantasy characters They are shades of gray with real faults, weaknesses, and redeeming qualities that give them depth and make them relatable.I loved the authors writing style and found the prose beautiful I can t wait to see how the story ends and look forward to of her work I enjoyed reading this than I place and some authors simply don t have enough material for a full epic and some dress teen romance up as lit fantasy Myself, I prefer fantasy geared toward adults, with a strong, deep plot and imperfect characters The Sons of Mil ticks all of my boxes The reviewer below, said something about pacing That s SUPER important in fantasy, and LM Riviere nails it Plot points are teased, dangled, and delivered with methodical precision Characters grow and develop as they should and I find myself sympathizing with the villains of the tale almost as much as the heroes The storyline, its arc, and climax are executed very, very well Another thing I liked about this book is that even though the prose is beautiful very much so , it didn t bog me down with unnecessary exposition I learned what I needed to, when I needed to, without wading through reams of useless descriptions When the author does paint you an image though, she uses a sharp brush When I read it, there were a few tiny errors in the text but nothing major I assume the author cleaned those up for publication There wasn t much I didn t care for in this book but to be fair, I will say that a few ancillary characters I really liked didn t seem to get their due time I think that might be because the author was setting up subplots for the sequel I think there are two but I am not sure I don t know if I agree with the reviewer below about the middle dragging because I found the detective style narrative of that arc, pretty informative I learned a lot about the main characters without all of that info being thrown in my face at the start I like a plot to unfold slowly It makes the climax so much impactful And speaking of that climax Man, if you DO find the middle a bit slow, wait for the end I felt like I needed a drink afterward Ha The last line too, is up there with some of the best I ve ever read The only critique I truly have of this book, is that I wish the author was releasing the sequels at the same time I can t wait flag 1 likeLike see review Jan 07, 2019 K.M West rated it it was amazing review of another edition I was given a sneak peak at the first ten chapters of The Sons Of Mil Book One to my new surroundings Beautiful descriptions of Innisfail lay nestled amongst the lovely and sometimes unintelligible traditional Irish names and titles, but it was the story that allowed me to get my bearings in Gaelic Ireland.Having to pause ten chapters in, I had a chance to digest both the content and a culture heavily inspired by Gaelic myth I found myself missing the characters, wanting to know what happened to Ben Maeden, Una, and Rian, and how the political rivalries that L.M Riviere introduced would affect their progress down the road What I wasn t anticipating, however, was how addicting the story would become once I got my full copy I finished the remaining 27 chapters in just over 24 hours Riviere s characters are deep, flawed, and hold their own perspectives based on their backgrounds, which allows for natural conflict to emerge amidst the major conflicts of the plot The Sons of Mil masters the balance between action, character development, and political intrigue without allowing them to get too heavy handed, adding levity with humor and hints of romance Impactful, haunting imagery places you alongside the protagonists and forces you to empathize with their pain and frustration as they interact with people, armies, and Otherworldy creatures.I completed The Sons Of Mil Book One of The Innisfail Cycle feeling completely emersed in the story and emotionally attached to the characters I can t wait to get my hands on the second book If you enjoy an epic adventure with realistic issues and implications, I would highly recommend checking it out flag 1
